Mint v/s Chewing gum

by Ayush Dugar on Jun 10, 2022

Which is better? Mint or gum? Is one healthier than the other? Actually, like everything else in the world, both mint and chewing gum have their own sets of pros and cons. However, one could be better for you as an individual. Let us brief you about how both of them work so you can make an informed decision about which to consume.

MINT

PROS

CONS

Freshens up breath quickly.

Since they are small, they can be consumed more frequently.

They don’t tire the mouth as much as chewing gum does.

Most brands do not do fruity flavours of mint.

Mints are considered more acceptable in a social or formal setting than chewing gum.

Some brands of mints can be more expensive than chewing gums.

Mints are easier to carry and since there are more in a pack, depending on the brand, they are usually value for money.

Mints do not last as long as chewing gum.

Mint doesn’t run out of flavour like chewing gum does.

If you suffer from TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint disorder), or any discomfort in your jaw while chewing, mints are a safe option to freshen your breath.

Mints usually leave a long lasting freshness in the mouth.

CHEWING GUM

PROS

CONS

Chewing gum keeps the mouth active for longer and keeps the saliva flowing.

Once the flavour runs out, it feels like you are chewing rubber.

They can be effective in exercising facial muscles.

It is not acceptable to chew gum in social or formal settings.

Chewing Gums come in fruity flavours.

Bad for overall tooth health as you can continue chewing for hours.

They freshen up the mouth quickly.

If you suffer from jaw pain or TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint disorder), you should not chew gum.

Chewing certain gums can clean the teeth and whiten them.

Chewing gums are heat sensitive and so, don’t last as long.

Chewing gums usually come in a pack of 5 and so, they run out quickly, meaning they are not as cost effective.

Since we cannot swallow gum, the waste usually ends up causing litter in public places.

Now, you could lean on either side and we won’t mind but it’s pretty clear which has more cons *cough cough*. No matter what you choose, always remember to select something SUGAR-FREE! If you are an avid consumer of breath freshner, not consuming sugar-free products can severely damage your tooth health and create problems for the body such as unwanted weight gain or diabetes. More importantly, if you consume these products to continually get rid of bad breath, there might be an underlying problem and we advise you to visit a doctor.
